How do you choose a humidor?

Choosing a humidor depends on three factors: the number of cigars to store, the value of the collection and the frequency of consumption. More than brand or price, build quality is what counts: solid wood, Spanish cedar at least 6 mm thick, a calibrated seal and a humidifier suited to the size.

How many cigars fit in a humidor?

A humidor's capacity depends on its internal dimensions and the format (vitola) of the cigars. Manufacturers often state capacity in Corona cigars, but larger formats reduce the real number by 30-50%.

Rule of thumb: never fill a humidor beyond 80% of its nominal capacity. The cedar needs space for air to circulate.

How does a humidor work?

A humidor works through a moisture exchange between the inner Spanish cedar and the enclosed air. The process unfolds in four stages:

  1. Accumulation: the Spanish cedar absorbs moisture from the humidifier, storing it in the porous cellular structure of the wood.
  2. Release: when the internal air dries (opening the lid, winter climate), the cedar releases the stored moisture, keeping the relative humidity stable.
  3. Absorption: when moisture is excessive, the cedar absorbs the surplus, preventing condensation and mold.
  4. Equilibrium: the lid seal blocks exchange with the outside, allowing the cedar-air system to find an equilibrium at 65-70%.

What temperature and humidity for storing cigars?

The optimal storage parameters for cigars are a temperature of 18-21°C and a relative humidity of 65-72%. The ideal equilibrium point is 20°C with 70% humidity. Values outside these ranges degrade cigars measurably within days.
