Spanish cedar in humidors: the irreplaceable wood
It doesn't come from Spain and it isn't a true cedar. Yet no other wood can do what Cedrela odorata does inside a humidor. Here's why.

What is Spanish cedar (and why it's called that)
Spanish cedar is the trade name for Cedrela odorata, a tree in the Meliaceae family — the same family as mahogany. It is not a true cedar (Cedrus spp., family Pinaceae) and it doesn't grow in Spain. The name comes from the wood's intense aroma, which resembles that of true cedars, and the fact that the first commercial specimens reached Europe through Spanish ports in the Americas.
It grows in tropical forests of Central and South America, from Mexico to Brazil. The wood is lightweight, soft, with open grain and an unmistakable fragrance that persists for decades. For over 150 years it has been the standard material for humidor interiors, and no synthetic or wooden alternative has ever matched its performance.
The three properties that make cedar irreplaceable
1. Active hygrometric regulation
Spanish cedar has a porous cellular structure that allows it to absorb and release moisture continuously. When the internal environment dries (opening the lid, winter climate), cedar releases accumulated moisture. When humidity is excessive, it absorbs it. It is a natural hygrometric buffer that reduces fluctuations by 40-60% compared to an empty environment.
2. Insect repellency
The essential oils in the wood — particularly cedrol and cedrene — are toxic to Lasioderma serricorne, the tobacco beetle. This pest is the number one enemy of cigar collections: females lay eggs in the tobacco and larvae tunnel through, destroying the cigar from within. Spanish cedar creates an aromatic barrier that repels adults. No additional chemical treatment is necessary.
3. Aromatic enrichment
Cigars stored in contact with cedar for extended periods (3+ months) develop rounder and more complex aromatic notes. The cedar doesn't overpower the tobacco's flavour but complements it, adding a woody-sweet nuance that professional catadors recognise as a sign of correct aging.
How to identify genuine Spanish cedar
Few inexpensive humidors use alternative woods stained to resemble cedar. Here are the telltale signs of genuine Cedrela odorata.
- Colour: pinkish-brown with darker grain. Not uniform red (that's often dye) nor pale yellow (low-quality woods).
- Scent: unmistakable, aromatic, persistent. If rubbed with your thumb, it releases odour even after years. An odourless wood is not Spanish cedar.
- Grain: open, visible to the naked eye, with linear pores. The surface has a slightly rough texture even after fine sanding.
- Weight: light for its volume. A 30×20×1 cm cedar panel weighs about 250-300 grams. Denser imitation woods are noticeably heavier.
- Reaction to moisture: if moistened with a drop of water, genuine cedar absorbs it within seconds, darkening locally. Treated or varnished woods do not.
Spanish cedar vs other woods used in humidors
Lower-end humidors feature interiors in alternative materials. Here's why they're not equivalent.
Northern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis): similar aroma but less porous cellular structure. Doesn't regulate humidity as well and the scent is sharper, almost medicinal. 40% lower cost.
Mahogany (Swietenia spp.): noble wood for exterior structure, but lacks the hygrometric and insect-repellent properties of cedar. Used for exteriors, rarely for interiors.
Veneered plywood: the worst case. Industrial plywood with a thin cedar layer (less than 0.5 mm). Doesn't have enough thickness to accumulate moisture. After 6-12 months it loses all hygrometric function.
Plastic or acrylic: found in travel humidors. No hygrometric regulation, no aroma. Requires a more powerful active humidifier.
When to replace your humidor's cedar
Quality Spanish cedar lasts 15-25 years in a well-maintained humidor. Signs that replacement is needed:
- Loss of scent: when rubbing the wood no longer releases the characteristic aroma. The essential oils are depleted.
- Persistent dark stains: mold or nicotine deposits that cannot be removed by cleaning. The wood is saturated with contaminants.
- Warping or detachment: cedar buckles or pulls away from walls due to repeated humidity/dry cycles. Joints open and moisture escapes.
- Unpleasant odour: if the cedar develops an acrid or rancid smell, it has absorbed too much over too long and is beyond recovery.
Replacing cedar is a cabinetmaker's job: panels must be cut to size, glued with non-toxic adhesives (hide glue or neutral PVA) and seasoned before reassembly. It's also the moment to consider a new humidor if the exterior has lost quality.
Common myths about Spanish cedar
"Thicker is better". False. Beyond 10 mm thickness, cedar adds weight without significantly improving hygrometric regulation. The optimal thickness is 6-8 mm.
"Cedar should be replaced every year". False. In a properly maintained humidor, cedar lasts decades. Annual replacement is a recommendation from replacement-parts sellers, not a technical necessity.
"Spanish cedar is endangered". Partially false. Cedrela odorata is listed in CITES Appendix II, which regulates international trade but doesn't ban use. Certified, legally sourced wood is abundant.
