Mold in your humidor: how to eliminate and prevent it

Mold or plume? How to tell the difference

Before taking action, verify that it really is mold. Plume (also called bloom) is a crystalline white film that forms on well-aged cigars: it is the crystallization of tobacco oils and is desirable. It appears as a fine, dry powder that brushes off easily.

Mold is different: it has a fuzzy appearance and can be white, green, yellow, or blue. It feels damp to the touch, has an earthy smell, and does not brush off easily. If you see it on the cedar or on your cigars, act immediately.

Step 1: isolate the cigars

Remove all cigars. Those with visible mold should be inspected individually: if the mold is only on the wrapper (the outer leaf) and has not penetrated the body, you can try brushing it off with a clean, dry cloth. If it has penetrated or covers more than 10% of the surface, the cigar is lost — discard it.

Mold-free cigars should be transferred to a clean container (not the humidor) while you work on cleaning.

Step 2: clean the cedar

Using a cloth dampened with 70% isopropyl alcohol, wipe the entire interior surface of the cedar. The alcohol kills mold spores and evaporates without leaving residue. Do not use bleach, ammonia, or household cleaners: they would be absorbed by the wood and transferred to the cigars.

After cleaning, leave the humidor fully open for 48 hours in a dry, well-ventilated environment. The cedar must dry completely — dead spores do not regrow, but live spores on damp wood do.

Step 3: restart the humidor

After 48 hours, the humidor is clean and dry. Now it must be re-seasoned, but with a lower humidity target: 65% instead of the classic 70%. Mold thrives above 72%; 65% is sufficient for cigars and inhospitable for spores.

1. Moisten the interior with distilled water (never tap water).
2. Charge the humidifier with fresh solution.
3. Close and wait 72 hours for it to stabilize at 65%.
4. Reintroduce only healthy, inspected cigars.

How to prevent mold in the future

• Keep humidity at 65-70%, never above 72%.
• Use only distilled water: the minerals in tap water feed spores.
• Replace the propylene glycol solution every 6 months: PG is antimicrobial, but loses effectiveness over time.
• Do not overcrowd: cigars packed too tightly block air circulation.
• Air it out every 2 weeks: open for 30 seconds to refresh the air and reduce spore concentration.
• Monitor temperature: above 23°C the risk of mold doubles.
