Ideal temperature for a humidor
The internal temperature of a humidor should be maintained between 18°C and 21°C (64–70°F). This range is not arbitrary: it is the interval in which Spanish cedar can exchange moisture with the environment stably, without condensation or drying.
Temperatures above 23°C (73°F) accelerate the biological activity of tobacco and increase the risk of mold. Temperatures below 16°C (61°F) slow the cedar's ability to release moisture, leading to progressive drying of the cigars even when the hygrometer reads correct values.
Thermal stability matters more than the absolute value. A humidor subjected to 5–6 degree swings within a day suffers thermal stress that compromises both the wood and its contents. For this reason, the placement of the humidor in your home is a crucial decision: avoid proximity to radiators, south-facing windows, air conditioners and air vents.
Relative humidity: the correct value
The ideal relative humidity inside a humidor falls between 65% and 72%. The exact value depends on personal preference and cigar type, but 70% is considered the equilibrium point for most collections.
Humidity below 60% dries the cigar: the wrapper cracks, combustion becomes too fast and the flavour turns harsh. Humidity above 75% creates conditions for mold proliferation and makes the draw irregular, with difficult pulls and bitter notes.
The hygrometer should be calibrated at least once a year. The most reliable method is the saturated salt solution test: seal the hygrometer in a container with a bottle cap filled with moistened (but not dissolved) salt, wait 24 hours and verify it reads 75%. If the reading differs, adjust the calibration.
Spanish cedar: why it is the humidor wood
Spanish cedar (Cedrela odorata) is the wood traditionally used in humidor construction for three precise reasons, none of which can be substituted by other species.
First: it actively absorbs and releases moisture. Cedar acts as a hygrometric buffer, releasing humidity when the environment dries and absorbing it when excessive. This property maintains internal microclimate stability even with frequent openings.
Second: natural insect resistance. The aromatic oils in cedar repel beetles and other pests that could infest tobacco. No chemical treatment is necessary.
Third: aroma. Spanish cedar imparts a characteristic fragrance to the cigar that enriches the aging process. Cigars stored for months in a well-seasoned humidor develop rounder aromatic notes compared to fresh ones.
There are variants — Honduran cedar, Canadian cedar — but Cedrela odorata from Central America remains the standard for superior quality of absorption and resistance.
Seasoning: how to prepare a new humidor
A new humidor is not ready for use. The internal Spanish cedar needs to be seasoned — that is, brought to the correct moisture level — before receiving cigars. The process takes 3 to 14 days, depending on the humidification device and wood thickness.
- Moisten the cedar: with a clean cloth lightly dampened with distilled water, gently wipe the interior walls and bottom. Do not soak: the wood should absorb, not drip.
- Charge the humidifier: fill the humidification device (sponge, gel crystals or cartridge) with propylene glycol solution or distilled water, per manufacturer instructions.
- Close and wait: seal the humidor shut for at least 72 hours. The internal hygrometer should stabilise between 68% and 72%.
- Verify and correct: if after 3 days humidity is still low, repeat the cedar moistening. If too high, leave the humidor open for one hour and reclose.
A common mistake is skipping seasoning and inserting cigars immediately. The result is that the dry cedar absorbs moisture from the cigars instead of providing it, causing rapid and harmful drying in the first weeks.
Placement: where to put your humidor
The placement of a humidor directly influences the stability of its internal microclimate. The rules are simple but often neglected.
Away from heat sources: radiators, stoves, fireplaces, cookers. Direct heat evaporates water from the humidifier in hours rather than days, leaving the cedar dry.
Away from air currents: air conditioners, fans, frequently opened windows. Moving dry air accelerates moisture loss through the wood joints.
Away from direct sunlight: UV rays degrade cedar over time and radiant heat causes thermal fluctuations. A closed cabinet or a shelf in partial shade is ideal.
On a stable surface: the humidor must not vibrate or tilt. Hinges and the gasket seal work correctly only when the cabinet is perfectly level.
Periodic humidor maintenance
The maintenance of a quality humidor is minimal but not negligible. A well-built humidor, if cared for, lasts decades.
Every 7–14 days: check the humidifier level and top up with distilled water or solution. Check the hygrometer reading.
Every 2–3 months: rotate the cigars — move those at the bottom to the top and vice versa — to ensure uniform exposure to humidity. Cigars in direct contact with cedar exchange moisture faster than those in the centre.
Every 6–12 months: clean the interior with a dry cloth. Never use chemical products, solvents or detergents: cedar would absorb the odour and transfer it to the cigars. If necessary, wipe with a cloth barely moistened with distilled water and then leave open for one hour.
Propylene glycol replacement: if using a propylene glycol/water mixture, it should be replaced every 6 months. The propylene glycol has a buffering function that depletes over time.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using tap water: dissolved minerals clog the humidifier and leave deposits on cedar. Always use distilled water.
- Over-moistening the cedar: if the wood drips or shows dark stains, it is too wet. This causes joint swelling and mold risk.
- Overcrowding the humidor: cigars need space to breathe. An overfilled humidor prevents moisture circulation and creates dry zones.
- Ignoring the hygrometer: an uncalibrated hygrometer is worse than no hygrometer. Verify its calibration with the salt solution test.
- Opening too frequently: each opening releases humidity. For valuable collections, limit openings to once or twice a week.
- Mixing very different cigars: aromatic cigars transfer their scent to neighbours. Separate by intensity if possible.
